Last Words: “I Thirst”
We continue our Lenten worship series, โLast Words,โ as Pastor Ken Curtis explores Jesusโ statement on the cross: “I thirst.” Going beyond the literal meaning, we discover how John’s gospel reveals deeper theological truths through this brief statement. We examine Jesus’ choice to embrace suffering rather than take the easy way out, the significance of his full humanity, and the rich Passover symbolism of the hyssop branch used to offer him drink. Join us as we reflect on our own spiritual thirst and how we’re called to respond to the thirst of others around us.
Sermon Reflections:
- How does Jesus choosing “the hard way rather than the easy way” by refusing the first drink challenge you in your own life choices?
- Sometimes discomfort and sacrifice can be redemptive. When have you experienced this truth in your own spiritual journey?
- How does understanding Jesus’ full humanity (demonstrated by his thirst) impact your relationship with him?
- In what ways might you be trying to quench your spiritual thirst through things other than Christ?
- Pastor Ken connects Jesus’ words “I thirst” with the Passover symbolism through the hyssop branch. How does seeing Jesus as the Passover Lamb deepen your understanding of salvation?
- What “thirst” do you see in your community that you could respond to, following the example of the person who offered Jesus the drink?
